After half an hour of restlessly staring at the ceiling, Ryan headed back downstairs. The last thing she wanted was to be in close proximity to her mother, but she needed something to occupy her hands, so she stepped into the kitchen to help.

“I thought I told Matt to tell you that you aren’t allowed to help,” her grandmother said, rolling out the dough for her delicious homemade chicken potpies.

“I need something to do.”

“Why don’t you go back out and join Luke and Matt again?”

“They’re still playing?”

“They took a break, but they’re back at it again.” Ashleigh glanced out the window that faced the driveway. “They seem to be hitting it off remarkably well.”

The observation brought much-needed relief. She gazed out the window and watched Luke, Matt, and Alex throw the football and laughed. It looked like they were engaging in little friendly male rivalry. She barely noticed when her mother joined her beside the window.

“He seems like a very nice man,” Jillian remarked. “But don’t you think you’re rushing into this?”

“Hardly. We’ve been dating for over two months already, and we’ve taught together for almost four and a half years.”

“I didn’t realize that.”

“That’s because you have a habit of not listening.”

“I’m just worried….”

Ryan waited almost a full minute before she spoke, unable to endure the increasing hum of dread. “What are you worried about?”

“Well, this trip here seems a little sudden.”

“We’ve been planning it since Matt told us when he would be here.”

Her mother plowed on as if she hadn’t spoken. “Your boyfriend just bought a roomier vehicle—”

“Because the Jeep has a ton of miles, and with him, me, Alex, and Bridger, it’s too cramped for trips like this one.”

“—and you seem a little tired and surly.” Jillian paused. “You’re not pregnant again, are you?”

“Jillian!” Ashleigh gasped.

“It’s a fair question, isn’t it? It wouldn’t be the first time.”

“Go to hell, Mother,” Ryan spat, and for the second time in an hour, stormed away.

“That was a terrible thing to say to her,” she heard her grandmother say with disgust thick in her voice. Ryan paused in the living room. “And you wonder why she has such a hard time confiding in you. If you had ever truly attempted to repair your relationship with your daughter, if you had been there for her instead of ridiculing her, she might actually talk to you, and you’d know that she can’t be pregnant.”

“You can’t be insinuating that they haven’t….”

“I’m not insinuating anything. I’m stating it outright.” Ashleigh let out a disapproving humpf. “He cares about her, Jillian, and he respects her. So I suggest you get to know him because he might very well be your son-in-law someday soon.”

Her mother brushed that aside and launched into a diatribe about how Ryan and Shane had been dating for years. She railed on about how it hasn’t been nearly long enough for Ryan to know if she and Luke were truly compatible.

“Ryan, I know you’re listening, so get your backside in here,” her grandmother demanded.

Reluctantly, she returned to the kitchen, scowling at her mother.
